Why is it called Neste MY Renewable Diesel?

How does Neste MY Renewable Diesel differ from fossil diesel?

Neste MY Renewable Diesel performs as well as fossil diesel, but is made from renewable raw materials reducing GHG emissions by up to 75 or up to 95%* compared to fossil diesel.

Neste MY is well-suited for very cold weather conditions, up to -34°C / -29 F. In fact its cold performance is better than that of fossil diesel, as the high cetane number ensures efficient and clean combustion.

Are renewable diesel such as Neste MY and biodiesel the same product?

No. Renewable diesel and biodiesel are two different fuels. Neste MY Renewable Diesel uses only renewable raw materials and all suppliers must meet strict sustainability criteria. Also, the processing of the raw materials differs. Neste MY is an HVO - vegetable oil that is purified and treated with hydrogen at a high temperature. This gives it a similar chemical composition to fossil diesel. 

Biodiesel is based on fatty acid methyl ester (FAME). Its quality is lower and less constant. Biodiesel also differs in composition from both fossil and renewable diesel. Thanks to its chemical composition, Neste MY Renewable Diesel requires no additional investment in the vehicle fleet or additional maintenance. Biodiesel does, however, require engine modifications and/or increased servicing.

What quality standards does Neste MY meet?

Neste MY Renewable Diesel meets both the ASTM D975 2-D standard in the US, and the European EN15940 standard. 

Which vehicles and engines can use Neste MY Renewable Diesel?

Thanks to its  similar chemical composition with fossil diesel, it can be refueled directly into any diesel vehicle, without any  modification to the engine.

Which engine manufacturers have approved the use of Neste MY Renewable Diesel?

Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar, Volvo Trucks, Paccar, Mack, John Deere, plus many other international brands such as Mercedes Trucks, BMW Group, Renault, Scania, DAF, Citroën, Peugeot, etc.have approved the use of Neste MY Renewable Diesel™. Please address any specific concerns directly to us, as we are continuously partnering with OEMs for more testing and approval work around the world.

Most heavy duty truck and engine manufacturers, such as Cummins, Detroit Diesel (Daimler), and Volvo, have approved the use of pure renewable diesel in their engines.

Is Neste MY of higher quality than other HVOs on the market?

Neste MY is an HVO in its purest form (HVO100). Compared to other HVOs, Neste MY has the most extensive raw material portfolio, excellent production stability and superior cold properties. HVO's come in all kinds of mixed forms. HVO20 for example, consists of 20% HVO and 80% fossil diesel. In pure HVO100, of course, the sustainability benefits are the greatest. Whenever pure HVO is blended with diesel, the sustainability benefits are reduced proportionally. For example, while HVO100 provides a CO₂e reduction of up to 90%, with HVO20 this is only 18%.
